Bechtel Donates $10K to REACH Museum to Expand School Field Trips

RICHLAND, Wash. (DATE) – The REACH Museum is excited to announce a $10,000 sponsorship from Bechtel, aimed at making school field trips more accessible for students from underserved communities. This funding will help cover the cost of field trips, ensuring that all students—regardless of their financial situation—have the opportunity to experience hands-on learning at the museum.

“We want every student to have the chance to explore the history, science, and environment of the Mid-Columbia region,” said Pauline Schafer, Education Manager at the REACH Museum. “Thanks to Bechtel’s generous support, we can remove financial barriers and welcome even more students to learn and engage with our exhibits.”

Bechtel’s support aligns with its broader mission of fostering STEM education and workforce development in the Tri-Cities region. “Supporting organizations like the REACH Museum is part of our commitment to give back to this great community. By expanding access to interactive STEM learning, we’re opening doors for students to explore new ideas, develop critical skills, and discover pathways to rewarding careers right here in our backyard,” said Brian Hartman, Bechtel Senior Vice President and Project Director of the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plan. “These learning opportunities spark curiosity and help build the future leaders of our region and beyond.”

The REACH Museum’s field trip program offers guided and self-guided experiences for K-12students, designed to align with classroom learning. Educator-led tours include hands-on activities covering topics like the Columbia River’s resources, local ecosystems, Ice Age floods, and the history of the Hanford Site. Schools can also opt for a self-guided visit, with scavenger hunts and other resources to help students connect with the exhibits.

Typically, guided field trips cost $210 per class, while self-guided visits are $5 per student. With Bechtel’s support, schools that need financial assistance can apply for subsidies to cover these costs. Teachers interested in scheduling a field trip or applying for financial assistance can contact the Education Manager at paulines@visitthereach.us or 509-943-4100 ext. 113.
